Filter and
waterfall pumps
Our filter and waterfall pumps
move large quantities of water and are designed to handle solids. Any solid that
will pass through the case will pass through the pump, hence no foam pre filter
is required so removing the need to clean. In a typical pond these pumps will
only need cleaning once or twice a year. Due to their unique design electricity
consumption is low.
A filter pump will need to
turnover the pond volume once every two hours. Always select a larger model as
flow is reduced by fitting a filter and long lengths of pipe. Flow is also
reduced the higher the outlet.
To calculate the pump size
Vertical height outlet is from
pond surface (called the head) in metres
Add 0.5m for a filter, add
another 0.5m for every 3m of hose
This is the total head
Now select pump that will give
half the pond volume at this head.
Example
3000 litre pond
Pressure filter fitted 3 metres
away from the pond, with water returning down a waterfall 1metre high
Head = 1(head) +0.5 (filter)+
0.5 (3m of pipe) = 2m
Pump required to pump 1500
litres @ 2m head
When using a waterfall allow a
minimum of 1000 litres/hour for every 10cm width of waterfall sill.
Always use a large bore pipe to
maximise flow (we recommend 32mm black flexi pipe)
Fountain Pumps
A fountain in a pond adds new
dimensions– movement and sound. Fountain pumps have several different fountain
heads included, allowing the water pattern to be changed. Fish love a fountain
as the constant movement raises the oxygen level making them more active. (Keep
your pump running on hot nights to keep the oxygen level up and your fish safe)
Feature Pumps
High performance feature
pumps are for self contained water features, indoors or out. Small in size but
high on water flow
Here's a quick tip ...
most pond pumps have a 2 way flow capability. It is, however difficult to set a
permanent balance between waterfall and fountain. To make life simple we
recommend that you use a good quality solids handling pump such as max flo to
run your filter and waterfall, use a fountain pump such as the A1 piranha 800
priced at just £19.99 and with very low running costs for your fountain. This
will save you hours of cleaning time and provide consistent water flow.
